THE 18th KINGSBURY CLASSIC 10km

TUESDAY MAY 8th 2018 : 7.30 pm

We are delighted to be back for the eighteenth time with this classic 10km race through the glorious scenery of Kingsbury Water Park in Warwickshire : two laps of footpaths, grass tracks and a short tarmac section twisting around the lakes and pools of the water park, with a section alongside the river.  We are again grateful to PEEL ROAD RUNNERS who have agreed to assist us with marshalling duties on the night, ensuring a pleasant , problem-free event for everyone.

Your entry fee still includes car parking which would otherwise cost you at least £3.00.  Full race details, and previous results, are all available below.

ON-LINE ENTRIES AVAILABLE AT www.runbritain.com

This annual event proved as good as ever if for no other reason that it takes place in the fabulous Kingsbury Water Park Nature Reserve in the Coleshill/Tamworth area. The other good thing was that it was a 2 lapper so you managed to see the stunning scenery, lakes, rivers and all the wild life twice.  Around 200 (including 11 Massey runners) started in the woods and the whole event was trails, paths, gravel tracks and absolutely no traffic but superb friendly marshals.

En route there were moorhens, coots, ducks, grebes, herons, swans, geese all applauding us as we sped past them. In my case I stopped several times to chat to them thus my sluggish time. Believe that if you want!  As usual along the river bank there were the gnats, may flies and insects a plenty for us to “gulp down” if we dared to breathe through our mouths but they were not as bad as in previous years. Yet they are all part of the nature at this wonderful place.  We used to bring our children here many years ago so it was full of pleasant memories all the way round.

So a huge thanks to Richard Baker of Camba Events  for putting this on again. Richard use to be a prolific runner, and along with Chris Harrison (he of the continuing  list of road races fame) and me, we used to see who could do the most races in a year. All 3 of us battled it out for years with each of us usually in the 70s for events done. In fact not long ago Richard ran 30 races alone in June. Beat that anyone. This year I ran, Chris marshalled and Richard organised it.

Check out Camba Events as there are other local races put on by Richard at Aldridge Airport and Cannock Chase. He is well worth supporting.

Well done everyone and thanks Massey for waiting for me to finish. Duck for dinner tonight !!

2018 RACE

May 9th :: A massive thank you to everybody at Peel Road Runners - the 10 members who ran the race, and the dozens of others who marshalled, handed out water or medals to you all.  The race couldn't survive without you all - and we received a dozen or more positive comments from the runners using words like brilliant and outstanding.  THANK YOU.
May 9th :: We want to ensure that everybody who finished last night's Kingsbury Classic received their deserved medal - record entries left us short by what should have been 21 medals.  However we have come home with 19 unclaimed medals, so if you had a crossed number but picked up a medal can you let us know please so we don't send you another. Otherwise, everybody from number 146 to 168 should be due a medal. Please let us know if you didn't get one so we can make sure everybody does.
May 9th :: What an exciting finish to the Ladies race as CLAIRE SMITH from Charnwood AC and 2013 Ladies Champion ANGELA MENSING from Stone Master Marathoners raced neck and neck through the finishing straight to the line. Spectators were heard to comment "I wouldn't want to call that one", but somebody had to. It really was a virtual dead-heat but a last gasp effort just saw CLAIRE SMITH take it.  So close !  Both ladies were timed at 42.33 with EMMA PICK of Peel RR coming home third in more relaxed style on 43.01.
May 9th :: In an excellent men's race, two-times Champion Danny Warren missed out on a hat-trick of titles after a fourth placed finish. In near perfect conditions, Danny's team-mate AARON CHETWYND KEPT the title with Badgers RC in a time of 35.04. GORDON SMITH from Heanor RC was runner-up in 35.49, with BARRY LLOYD of Royal Sutton Coldfield AC third in 36.13.
May 8th :: After setting up in blazing sunshine the rain came in about 5 o'clock but had left us by start time leaving a gloriuos sunny evening with a gentle breeze and temperatures more suited to running. A record entry of 222 runners with a record number of finishers tackled the tough but glorious two-lap course around the Water Park.
May 8th :: Also back is our 2017 Ladies Champion LAURA GALE of Bournville Harriers. Laura is wearing race number 397 tonight. KIRI ELLIOTT, third lady last year and also from Bournville Harriers is also back tonight wearing race number 325.
May 8th :: 2016 & 2017 Champion DANNY WARREN of Badgers running club is entered once again and going for a hat-trick of Kingbsury titles. Danny is race number 402.
May 8th :: Race HQ will be unattended and LOCKED between 7.20pm and approximately 8.15pm and we will be unable to unlock the room if you require access. It is suggested therefore that you leave your kit etc in your cars and not in Race HQ.
May 7th :: Registration opens tomorrow night at 6.00pm until 7.20pm - car parking is within 50 yards of Race HQ and will be free to all runners from 6.00pm. PLEASE NOTE on-the-night entries are £13 for club runners and £15 for unattached runners.  Please help us and others by bringing the correct money with you. Cheques should be made out to CAMBA EVENTS.
May 5th :: On-line entries have now closed at a record high of 129 (plus one postal entry) - thanks for your support. Currenmt forecast is for a hot & sunny Bank Holiday weekend turning a little cooler on tuesday with the possibility of a couple of showers in the afternoon.

2017 RACE

May 16th :: We have finally sorted out the unofficial team positions in the 2017 Kingsbury Classic, and this has now been added to the final race results for your viewing. No surprise that BADGERS won the mens team race as their first three scorers finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd - difficult to beat. BOURNVILLE HARRIERS won the ladies team race with a 1st, 3rd and 11th finisher. Click on the results link in the left hand info table for full team results.
May 11th :: Thanks to DAVE PHILLIPS of Massey Ferguson RC for a wonderful race report following his latest run at Kingsbury. Dave is an old running colleague of mine and we have used his report at the top of this page to entice you all back next year.
May 11th :: We would like to extend our grateful thanks to PEEL ROAD RUNNERS for their excellent marshalling duties on the night. This event really couldn't go ahead any more without their support on race night.  Thanks to VAL LAWSON for organising the marshals listing and all the Peelers for turning up.
May 10th :: Our sincere apologies - technical glitches prevented our provisional results from going online until earlier this evening.  The full results with positions in both your sex and your category are now available. Please click on the link in the info box on the left.
May 9th :: Very tired as it is now past Midnight, but the provisional results from tonight's 17th Kingsbury Classic are now completed and available to view.  CLICK HERE.

May 9th :: Congratulations to DANNY WARREN of Badgers RC who became only the third runner to successfully defend his title, winning the 2017 Kingsbury Classic in a time of 35.16. Second was CHRIS BAXTER with RYAN BENNETT third - a clean sweep by Badgers.
May 8th :: We may be short of a couple of marshals tomorrow night - if anyone is coming to the event but not running and would be willing to help us out, we would be very grateful. Just make yourselves known to Camba Events staff at race HQ.
May 8th :: REGISTRATION WILL OPEN TOMORROW NIGHT AT 6.00 pm. Please help us by entering as early as possible and bringing the correct entry fee.
